Why using multiple connections when you can get ALL IN ONE?
For a program upgrade of an aircraft mobile beverage maker, together with our principal Cristek INTERCONNECTS LLC, we have worked closely with our customer on a design where we have combined multiple contact sizes within one MIL-STD-83513 Standard Micro-D-51-Way-Housing.
By creating a customized insulator with mixed contact arrangement covering AWG10 (13 Amp), AWG20 (7,5 Amp) and AWG22 (mAmp) contact sizes, the customer is able to save space and weight by reducing the number of connectors – rather using 3 connectors for each individual contact size
they can now use one connection.
In addition, we were also able to meet the space concerns behind the connections by routing the wiring of all 3 different wire sizes to fit perfectly within the very limited space environment of the taphead of the mobile beverage maker. An extra overmold is also used to offer the requested strain relief of the overall wire bundle.
The two 3D-Models above picture the current design. This connector depicts the plug, which shows the mixed contact population with wire routing 90° vertical to the connector shell.
Below connector depicts the receptacle, which shows the mixed contact population with a wire routing of 90° side entry to the connector shell.
