The switches are available with 36, 45, 60, and 90 degree indexing with one or two poles (see Circuit Diagram). They include fixed stops, sealed and unsealed styles, PC or solder lug terminals, RFI & EMI protection, and a .125″ or .250″ dia. shaft. The shaft is provided with either a single flat or a screwdriver slot.
Unique design construction features include: all terminals on the rear, self-cleaning contacts for low level switching, and low contact resistance through the life of the switch (25,000 cycles min.). The detent mechanism provides smooth positive detent action and a mechanical life in excess of 50,000 cycles. In the M1800, the terminals and commons are molded in diallyl phthalate thermosetting plastic. COLE seals the housing, plastic, terminals, and commons with a special process to eliminate flux contaminants from seeping inside the switch during wave soldering and cleaning.
1800 Series – Encoded
One-half inch encoded switches for direct logic level interfacing derive from the MIL-S-3786, MIL-S-22710, SERIES 1800 rotary selector switches.
Unlike other switches being introduced, the COLE 1800 series encoded switches anticipate both high-rel use, and the essentially dry circuit conditions of extremely low current switching; they offer 25,000 minimum life cycle and gold contacts – not found on most comparable units.
The switch is available in 221/2, 30, 36 and 45 degree indexing, with or without adjustable stops.
Quality construction, including materials that meet the strictest standards, allows these subminiature switches to combine high current switching capacity with constant low contact resistance. Long life and high reliability are assured by exceedingly stringent inspection and testing procedures.

A 1800 Spring Return Rotary Switch has a spring return mechanism which allows for momentary positions. A momentary position is active only as long as the operator holds the knob in that position; when the operator releases the knob, a spring returns the switch back to an adjacent position. This prevents the switch from remaining in a certain position when the operator lets go of the knob. This feature is available throughout COLE’s rotary switch product lines.
The SERIES 1800 spring return mechanism adds 0.160 inches to the behind panel length of the switch; all other dimensions remain unchanged.
The SERIES 1800 spring return mechanism is available in switches with 36¡ indexing (10 positions max) and 45¡ indexing (8 positions max).

IS3900 Series – Illuminated
The Series IS3900 switch offers maximum and optimum visibility at sunlight with minimum power levels. And at night, there is zero light leakage.
The Series IS3900 switch offers maximum and optimum visibility at sunlight with minimum power levels. And at night, there is zero light leakage through the length of the switch. Light can meet most chromaticity or intensity requirements. The light can be an LED or a T1 incandescent lamp.
The switch features good heat sinking capabilities, and delivers up to twice the light intensity of units at equivalent power levels. On light failure, reclamping can be done by the customer.
Cole can provide the replacement assembly. This switch can be used in airborne, shipboard, and submarine panel control displays and meets the brightness requirements of high altitude aircraft, as well as the MIL-S-901C shock requirement for submarines and ships.

IP3900 Series – Illuminated Shaft
The Series IP3900 switch offers maximum and optimum visibility at sunlight with minimum power levels. Can meet most chromaticity requirements.
Cole Instrument Corporation is proud to offer a rotary switch with illumination through the end of the shaft front. This can be used to light up any part of the rotary switch’s knob. An LED (Light Emitting Diode) or an incandescent lamp is on the back end of the switch body, and a light pipe or fiber optics brings the concentrated light through the switch to the shaft front.

Cole’s Series P3900, miniature P.C. termination rotary switch is designed to provide the ultimate mechanical and electrical reliability in instrumentation, industrial controls, medical equipment, aircraft, computers, communication, weapons, as well as ground support electronic equipment.
This P3900 Series switch is designed for high and low level switching, and to meet the requirements of MIL-S-3786 and tested per MIL-STD-202 as follows:
- THERMAL SHOCK PER MIL-STD-202; METHOD 107, TEST CONDITION “B”
- VIBRATION PER MIL-STD-202; METHOD 204, TEST CONDITION “B”
- MEDIUM SHOCK PER MIL-STD-202; METHOD 213
- HIGH SHOCK PER MIL-STD-202; METHOD 207
- MOISTURE RESISTANCE PER MIL-STD-202; METHOD 106
- EXPLOSION PROOF PER MIL-STD-202; METHOD 109
- SALT SPRAY PER MIL-STD-202; METHOD 101, CONDITION “B”
The switches are available with 30, 36, and 45 degree indexing and one to six poles per deck, (see Circuit Diagram).
Unique design construction features include: all terminals on one side, self-cleaning contacts for low level switching and low contact resistance through the life of the switch (25,000 cycles min).
Hardened steel sprocket and ball bearing detent mechanism provide smooth positive detent action and a mechanical life in excess of 100,000 cycles. In the P3900, the terminals and commons are molded in diallyl phthalate thermosetting plastic sealed between decks and between the plastic and the metal terminal with a special process to eliminate flux contamination seeping inside the switch during wave soldering and/or cleaning processes.
Rotors and non-shorting rings are molded of thermo-plastic glass filled to eliminate contamination by transferring plastic particles to the contact system during the life of the switch. The P3900 switch is built in a clean atmosphere, as are all Cole products, to prevent introduction of contaminants during assembly.
These and many other quality features will provide the ultimate in mechanical and electrical reliability, during the life of the switch.

Open Frame Series
Cole’s Open Frame Instrument Rotary Switch are Uniquely capable for High Voltage, High Current, and Low Resistance applications.
Cole’s Open Frame Instrument Quality Rotary Switches provide low contact resistance (.005W), very high contact reliability (a bifurcated brush means 100% redundancey to avoid contact failure), smooth action with positive positioning, precision design, and trouble-free construction of glass epoxy insulators and silver conductors.
Designed and manufactured to meet or exceed applicable sections of Military Specifications:
- MIL S 3786
- MIL T 945 QQ-P416
- MIL S 13282
- MIL STD 202
- MIL A 8625
- MIL STD 167
All Open Frame Series Switches are available pre-wired to terminal boards. When ordering, specify the locations of terminal boards as viewed from shaft ends such as: (top) or (left and top) (left, top and right) or terminal boards can be mounted on all four sides of each deck. Switches can be furnished pre-wired to connectors mounted in same manner.
Cole’s Open Frame Instrument Rotary Switch are Uniquely capable for High Voltage, High Current, and Low Resistance applications. The dielectric and conductive materials used are such that the switch performs like a high quality conductive wire between the pole and the contact when the switch is in position. The switch is rated for 100,000 cycles minimum. The contact mechanism is a bifurcated brush making it 100% redundant, for reliability in demanding switching conditions.
The Cole Open Frame Rotary Switch can be used on Electrical Test Equipment such as Low Voltage Signal Testing or Solid State Testing to eliminated transients. The switch can provide power to generators, receivers, transmitters, etc.
Multiple decks can be used to provide binary coded output.
